Recently, we learned that Welsh quilting informed American Amish quilt design.

In the late 17th century, a portion of Pennsylvania was settled by Welsh Quakers.

It's very likely that this introduction of Welsh material culture and traditions, particularly in Lancaster County (today, the oldest and largest Amish Community in the US), is the rootstock of Amish quilt sensibility.

Parallels may be drawn with arrangement, scale, even stitch patterns, but above all, the special and skillful use of color.

We've gathered a collection of Welsh and Amish quilt images here.

If you're keen on reading some expert opinions, we recommend Welsh Quilts, Jen Jones and Amish Quilts and the Welsh Connection, Dorothy Osler.
